THE SOLAR SYSTEM
By: Rhetta Coleman
Our Solar System is a small part of a galaxy. The galaxy is called the Milky Way, also the Solar syastem has many parts. the sun is the center of our solar syatem. Nine planets with their monns (satellites) go around (orbit) the sun. the planets revolve around the sun and each planet travels along its own orbit. and lastly planets rotate or spin around like a top when orbiting the sun.
Mercury
Mercury is our first planet from the sun. 36 million miles (58 million kilometers) away from the sun. mercury has no moons. Murcury is a small planet. it is about 1/3 the size of earth. it has a dusty surface filled with craters (round holes). Mercury looks a lot like earths moon. and mercury doesnt have an atmosphere.
Venus
venus is the second planet from the sun. its 67 million miles (108 million kilometers) from the sun. Venus has no moons. You can find venus shining low in the western sky at night. it is a dry, hot planet with tall mountains and deep valleys. Venus is covered by thick, yellow clouds. strong wind blow the clouds around.
Earth
Earth is the third planet from the sun. 93 million miles (149 million kilometers) from the sun. Earth has one moon. The Earth is a ball of rock almost covered by oceans. its not too hot and its not to cold. as far as we no, it is the only planet with plants, animals, and air we can breathe. From outer space earth looks like a planet with clouds and brown land areas and blue oceans.
Mars
Mars is the forth planet from the sun. 141 million miles (227 million kilometers) from the sun. Mars is about half the size of earth. it is a desert except for the ice caps at the north and the south poles. it has tall mountains and deep canyons. the soil is full of rust-colored iron dust. this makes mars look red. strong wind blow big storms of red dust. it is very cold on mars. mars doesnt have an atmosphere.
Jupiter
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun. 483 million miles from the sun. 16 known moons. Jupiter is the largest in the solar system. if jupiter were hollow, more than 1,000 planets the size of earth could fit inside it.
Saturn
Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun. 887 million miles from the sun. at least 18 moons. Like jupiter, saturn is a giant ball of gas with a rocky center. it is the second largest planet. it is about ten times as large as earth.
Uranus
uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. 1 billon, 783 million miles from the sun. uranus has 5 large moons and 10 small moons. Uranus, too, is a giant gas ball with a rocky center. it has some thin, dark rings. Uranus looks blue-green. a thick haze covers the planet. Uranus is so far from the sun that it is very, very cold.
Neptune
Neptune is the nineth planet from the sun. and its 2 billion , 794 million miles from the sun. it has 8 moons. Neptune is a large blue- green ball of gas with a center of rock and iron. The planet is covered with clouds. Neptune has three faint rings. Because Neptune is so far from the sun, it is very very cold also,
Pluto
Pluto is the last and fatherest planet from the sun. 3 billion, 666 million miles from the sun. pluto has 1 moon. Pluto is the smallest planet. it is smaller thatn earth's moon. it is also the coldest spot in the solar system. Pluto is known as one of the dwarf planets.
